melting aluminium in my garden

Picture

Home Furnace
January 2014

After visiting a casting foundry in south east London, I was inspired to try and re-create the sand casting process, by building a coal fuelled furnace in my garden.

To fully replicate the process, I created my own casting green-sand, mold boxes and wooden patterns, and successfully produced a number of small aluminium castings.

Wanting to create new experiments quickly, I found the ‘evaporative foam process’ online, and created 3 bespoke aluminium slingshots/catapults, each showing off the ‘beaded’ texture of polystyrene. The speed of this new process inspired my final major project in January 2015.
