Girder Candle Holder

May 2020

In May of 2018, my old workshop was demolished in preparation to begin building my new workshop studio. As the western wall was being broken up, we discovered a structural steel girder above the window. After it was extracted, I made sure to salvage it for use in future projects.

The Girder Candle Holder is sliced from the salvaged beam, then cut into a cylinder. After being immersed in a rust removing solution for a day or more, it is cleaned further with a wire wheel. This preserves the unique texture formed over six decades of slow corrosion. The cut edges are sanded and polished to a mirror finish, to contrast the rough texture of the sides.
