Hydrostar

October 2022

The idea for this inflated steel sculpture came from observing the growth of cacti, which have evolved to absorb moisture by expanding specially developed segments. Mimicking natural structures like these can lead to the creation of new and complex inflated metal forms, for use in both practical products and decorative sculpture.

The piece is finished first in high gloss black, then buffed with graphite powder. This imbues the surface with a mirror like shine that catches and reflects surrounding light, highlighting the unique appearance of inflated steel.
