Treadplate Vessel
October 2026
This work investigates whether a utilitarian industrial material can be elevated into fine craft. Through pressure washer hydroforming, flat plate steel expands into soft compound curves, without specialised tooling or marring the patterned surface.
This process achieves a fluid form that is very difficult to replicate in thick plate steel using conventional metalworking techniques. The treadplate pattern is transformed from its original functional purpose into a purely decorative texture, and the formerly rough edges are now mirror polished to highlight the inner beauty of the material, previously hidden under dark oxide scale formed during the heat of its manufacture.
